mine is the haunting (1963): cool movie here is the synopisis from imdb:

Dr. Markway, doing research to prove the existence of ghosts, investigates Hill House, a large, eerie mansion with a lurid history of violent death and insanity. With him are the skeptical young Luke, who stands to inherit the house, the mysterious and clairvoyant Theodora and the insecure Eleanor, whose psychic abilities make her feel somehow attuned to whatever spirits inhabit the old mansion. As time goes by it becomes obvious that they have gotten more than they bargained for as the ghostly presence in the house manifests itself in horrific and deadly ways.

Hill House has an evil history with tragic accidents, suicide, and human misjudgement. Dr. Markway (Richard Johnson) is apyschic researcher who assembles a group with histories linked to the paranormal. Eleanor (Julie Harris) was the subject of unexplained polterguist activities as a child. She also is riddled with guilt over her mother's death. Theadora (Claire Bloom) is a clairevoyant who befriends Eleanor at Hill House. Russ Tamblyn plays the cynical scion of the owners sent t make sure that the proprty is not affected by the researchers. Together the grouup explore Hill House, and their own insecurities. Director Robert Wise created a taught drama where the real question is who is haunted and who may be unstable.

My favorite is "The Others" (2001). The film is set during the period immediately following World War II. It features a Catholic mother with two small children in a remote country house off the coast of Normandy. In case you haven't seen the movie, I won't give the ending away, but the film is very "haunting" with the mother and children constantly hearing and/or seeing "the others", and great cinematography creating a visual atmosphere and feeling of thick paranormal activity.

I have never seen a more creepy ghost story...

the others is a very good film. There is some discussion that ghosts are extra demisional beings and they percieve us as we percieve them. This movie potrayed this rather well.
